Gerrit Cole has struck out 23 batters in his last three starts, each with at least seven strikeouts, and has bounced back from a slow start, dropping his ERA from 9.00 to 4.60 and earning two straight wins as a starter.
Admittedly, it’s an extremely small sample size, but the Mets’ power hitters in the lineup have had little success against Cole: Pete Alonso was 0-for-3 with one strikeout, Francisco Lindor was 4-for-23 with one hit, and J.D. Martinez was 8-for-46 (.174 batting average) with 18 strikeouts.
Brandon Nimmo had three hits, one home run and two strikeouts against Cole, and Jeff McNeil (3-for-7 against Cole) hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the sixth inning and give the Mets a chance to win the season series for the second time (2013) on Wednesday.
