Father Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) is one of Catholics’ best-loved poets. His poetry is instantly recognizable, rich with musical elements, yet still perplexes us with its idiosyncratic syntax, elliptical turns of phrase, and even neologisms. This created a need for an annotated collection of his poetry, and surprisingly, until the recent publication by Word on Fire, no such collection existed. A Kingfisher Catches Fire: Selected Poems and Notes by Gerard Manley Hopkinsedited by Holly Ordway. Holly returns to the podcast to introduce Hopkins and talk about Thomas and four of his poems: “The Windhover,” “Carrion Comfort,” “Patience,” and “As Kingfishers Catch Fire.”
