New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil was removed during the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians due to lower back tightness.
Gill called for a trainer after he threw a changeup to Cleveland slugger Jose Ramirez while Steven Kwan was stealing second base, and after a brief meeting with manager Aaron Boone and the trainer, Gill was replaced and replaced by Tim Hill.
Gil, coming off seven days of rest, gave up three runs and three hits over three-plus innings. The rookie walked six and struck out three, but only six of the 20 batters he faced, including Ramirez, got a strike on the first pitch.
Gill was 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA in 24 starts entering Tuesday’s game, and has struggled with control at times since missing most of the past two seasons due to Tommy John surgery, issuing 66 walks in 124 2/3 innings.
