Looking at my bathroom countertop, I can see natural skincare products scattered around it. Currently, there are a lot of healthy natural products on the market, but I still like to make it myself from time to time. And when my child was a baby, I made almost all of their baby care products.
Even if you’re not ready to jump on the DIY deodorant and toothpaste bandwagon yet, try your hand to make baby care recipes. It’s an easy way to make sure you use mild, simple, natural ingredients for sensitive skin.
Their small skin absorbs what we put on it, and choosing homemade products is an easy solution. These are the recipes I used when my kids were young. When they have babies, I hand them over to friends.
Natural Diaper Rape Cream – Cloth Diaper Safe!
I started cloth diapers with my third child and I am very happy that I switched! Not only is it much cheaper, it’s also natural and much easier than you would expect. I’ve been hearing too many horror stories about old fashioned cloth diapers from older relatives. Thanks to cloth diapers and better nutrition, my baby had very rare diaper rashes.
However, while rarely your baby will poop in the middle of the night and won’t wake up until the morning or have a rash while in the car seat while traveling, cloth diapers can be a little more difficult.
Some traditional diaper creams cannot be used with cloth diapers. Also, some ingredients void the cloth diaper warranty. Anything with petroleum jelly or cod liver oil can coat the diaper and prevent it from absorbing properly. After a lot of research (and trial and error), I finally created a diaper cream that is cloth diaper safe and works just like the medicated version. For soothing care, first infuse calendella and chamomile flowers into coconut oil!

Baby Oil Baby Care Recipes
Regular baby oils are oil-based, and most are packed with artificial scents! You can always use plain coconut oil, but making an infused oil adds extra soothing ingredients, which will heal the skin faster. Both calendula and chamomile settle on stimulated skin and have antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and sedative properties.
Here is my favorite herb infused baby oil recipe:
Natural baby oil
A simple baby oil recipe made with natural herbs.
yield: 8 Ounce
-
Place the herbs in a glass jar and pour oil over them. Place the lid on the jar, place in a cool, dark place, and shake for 4-8 weeks each day.
-
A faster method is to use the Stovetop injection method instead. On a medium-low heat, add the oil and herbs to the top of the double boiler. If necessary, refill the bottom pan with water.
-
Distort the herbs with cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.
-
Use it like regular baby oil.
This recipe is extremely soothing and perfect for full skin with eczema!
Soothing baby powder
Until recently, most baby powders were contaminated with asbestos (known to cause cancer). Currently, the brand chooses cornstarch over talc, but it contains other ingredients that are not good for babies. The iconic baby scent found in traditional baby skincare products is thanks to its artificial (and toxic) scent.
Thankfully, there are plenty of great options when it comes to natural baby powder! You can find such natural baby powder Organics from eraorganics and Baby powder with small twigs. If you want to make it yourself, it’s simple and inexpensive. It can also be customized with herbs.

Homemade baby wipes
Eight years ago, when my oldest was born (is it really that long?) I started making my own baby wipes. Like most DIY recipes, it was cheaper and healthier than buying diapers in the store. As mom knows, it’s easy to go through lots of wipes while wiping small tasses, hands and face!
And since I had already washed my cloth diapers several times a week, it was fine to throw cloth wipes on my diaper. You can also create disposable wipes using the Diaper Wipe Formula Solution with Paper Towel. Not only are the fabric items more natural and environmentally friendly, they’re also cheaper!

Super smooth baby lotion and lotion bar
I used the basic homemade lotion recipe for all kids, but it’s gentle enough for baby’s skin. For soft baby skin, we use soothing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, and vitamin E. For truly small things, skip the essential oils and inject herbs like calendula into the oil instead!
I also recently discovered that homemade lotion bars are even better options. They help protect the baby’s delicate skin, but they still allow breathing. You can inject lavender, chamomile, or calendula into the oil if you like, but the basic lotion bar is excellent for yourself. I especially like to use it on babies with sensitive skin and eczema. They are even easier to make, last longer and are fun for kids to use.
Check out our gorgeous lotion recipes here and the recipes in the lotion bar. Or try this baby balm recipe.
Baby shampoo or wash
Most babies don’t actually need soap or shampoo. It is best not to wash your skin’s natural protective oils. However, if you’re dealing with major diaper blowouts or another mess, soap can really help!
If you need foam soap to make your baby feel clean, I recommend you suggest Dr. Bronner’s Sensitive Skin Soap. Can be used for both soap and shampoo. When my baby was small, I used a damp, wet cloth to wipe away any mess most of the time. I followed up with coconut oil or baby oil (above) if necessary, but not often. If you want to go a step further and whisk your own Castile soap to make a baby wash, try the following recipes!

Natural teething/relieve pain
I don’t use my child’s Tylenol or Motlin with my child. Instead, I chose a more natural way to calm the tooth pain. In this post you will find many natural solutions for teeth survival.
Chamomile tinctures are my most used tinctures. I mainly use it externally on my baby to relieve coli pain and teeth for older children who have sleep problems or headaches or stomach pains.

Baby steam friction
Having a small thing with a suffocating nose is not fun for them or their parents. Most steam friction on the market is not safe as small things have menthol. This can cause your baby to stop breathing. There is a baby-safe version, but many contain oil-based ingredients. Also, I’m trying to avoid it.
Easy to rub your own steam with baby-friendly essential oils. This allows the mucus trapped in the lungs to move, opening the airways and making breathing more clear. In addition to homemade steam friction recipes, find natural store-bought options, while natural store-bought options, can be found at the link below.
