Trump’s first cabinet meeting on Wednesday was filled with amazing moments, and this was one of them.
When journalists asked if the generals involved in the tragic withdrawal from Afghanistan under Joe Biden were still employed, Trump suggested that Hegses should fire all of them. Hegseth continued saying that the investigation was currently underway.
Afghanistan’s withdrawal was an absolute turmoil, leading to the deaths of 13 American service members. Biden’s approval rating never recovered after the episode.

Trump wants to fire a general who has been caught up in Afghanistan’s withdrawal
President Trump said “one of the whole military generals involved in the US withdrawal from Afghanistan should be fired and should sit next to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Trump questioned whether his administration would be fired or exempt from his duties for military officers involved in the August 2021 withdrawal.
“I’m not going to tell this guy what to do, but if he has a place I’ll fire all of them,” Trump gestured to Hegses.
Hegseth responds that with the fatal and chaotic withdrawal in August 2021, the Pentagon is “having a full review of every aspect of what happened,” and intends to provide “full accountability.”
Trump was extremely critical of the US’s chaotic and deadly departure that took place under President Biden, but in 2020 he negotiated with the Taliban, which had committed to an earlier timeline for the drawdown of US forces in Afghanistan, signed a contract, and began moving by Trump.

After a reporter asks Trump whether he fired all the generals involved in the retreat of Afghanistan, which he failed, he answers:
“That’s a great idea. I’m not going to tell Pete Hegses what to do, but if I’m in his place, I’ll fire all of them.”

Afghanistan’s withdrawal has become a symbol of the frustration felt by millions of Americans tired of watching the disaster unfold without anyone taking responsibility.
