Yes, Gov. Tim Walz is that guy — your favorite neighbor, your teacher, your coach, the person you call when you need help changing a tire, are facing a difficult conversation with your parents, or just want a fun fishing buddy.
That’s the man who appeared Wednesday night in Chicago to accept the Democratic nomination for vice president at the Democratic National Convention. The crux of his message was:Everybody belongs here.”
“It is the honor of my life to be nominated for vice president of the United States,” he said. “Thank you for bringing joy to this fight.”
He spoke of how his students first introduced him to politics, leading him to run for Congress.
“I was a high school teacher in my 40s with young kids, no political experience and no money to campaign in a deep red district. But you should never underestimate a high school teacher.”
And when he got there?I am a better shooter than most Republicans in Congress, and I have the trophies to prove it. But I’m also a father, and I believe in the Second Amendment, but I also believe that our first responsibility is to keep our kids safe.”
He went on to talk about his tenure as Governor of Minnesota.
“While other states were banning books from their schools, we were taking hunger out of our schools,” he said. And when other states were banning abortion, his state became a refuge for its citizens.
“We have a golden rule,” he said: “Focus on yourself.”
Then he this Campaign. Speaking about Project 2025, he said he learned one thing from his experience as a coach.
““If someone takes the time to write a playbook, trust me, they will use it,” he said. “That’s an agenda that nobody asked for. “This is a policy that does nothing for our neighbors in need. Is it crazy? Yes, it is. But it’s also wrong and dangerous,” he added.
“I don’t know about you guys, but I really feel for these people,” he continued. “We can offer something better to the American people.”
Then, in true coaching mode, he added: “You’ll have time to sleep when you’re dead. I’ll leave you on the battlefield!”
