In Saturday night’s Mountain West game in Honolulu, Ashton Giunty had a season-high 31 carries for 217 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a scoring pass for No. 17 Boise State. led the team to a 28-7 victory over Hawaii.
Giunty eclipsed 200 yards on the ground for the third time this season and tied the nation’s record for rushing touchdowns with 18. It was his first touchdown catch this season.
The favorites for the Heisman Trophy are the Broncos (5-1, 2-0), who have won 10 straight games over Hawaii and rushed for a nation-leading 1,248 yards on just 126 carries.
Boise State’s Maddux Madsen completed 17 of 25 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Cameron Camper had a season-best seven catches for 111 yards and Austin Bolt caught a touchdown pass for the Broncos.
Boise State had eight sacks against the Rainbow Warriors. Jayden Virgin Morgan led the way with 2.5 points, and Sei Oladipo had 2 points.
Brayden Shager completed 21 of 36 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown for Hawaii (2-4, 0-2). Tyrann Hines had the scoring reception for the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawaii entered the fourth quarter trailing by just six points, but the Broncos built some cushion with an 11-play, 91-yard drive that began in the third quarter. Giunty caught a 5-yard pass in the right flat for a touchdown, and Madsen threw a two-point conversion throw to the Bolts to make it 21-7 with 12 minutes left.
Hawaii turned the ball over on downs at the Boise State 19-yard line with 5:20 left. Giunty ran 13 yards on the next play, surpassing 200 yards for the fifth time in his career.
Moments later, the Broncos were up 4-1 when Madsen threw downfield to Bolt, who repulsed the tackle attempt for a 44-yard scoring run with 3:44 left for a 21-point lead. .
Earlier, Jonah Dalmas kicked a 24-yard field goal on Boise State’s first possession.
Later in the quarter, Giunty scored a 54-yard touchdown run down the right sideline with 5:48 left in the quarter to give the Broncos a 10-0 lead. This was Giunty’s eighth scoring run of 54 yards or more this season, and he also had a 68-yard non-scoring run.
