California Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration has called for $2.8 billion in relief from taxpayer-funded Medi-Cal. program It was requested last week.
For the $9.5 billion spent by Medi-Cal on health care for illegal immigrants this year, Newsom told the press that this was at least partially condemnation. He also shared his support for universal taxpayer-funded healthcare.
“That’s partial.” I said Newsom talks about the connection between expanding taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigration and the $6.4 billion relief request. “I believe in universal healthcare…it’s just a core principle.”
Newsom said that rolling back expansions is not in his “docket”, but he is open to “changes.”
With an estimated 1.9 million illegal immigrants and the $9.5 billion spent on health care, the state has spent about $5,000 per person this year on health care.

The average illegal immigrant in California Earn money $13 per hour, often in non-tax cash or $27,040 per year if you work 40 hours a week. If taxed, this wage generates $464 in state income tax. Assuming that 30% of the remaining income is passed to rent and the rest is spent on expenditures eligible for sales tax, that’s an additional $1,372 in state sales tax.
This means that working illegal immigrants could contribute around $1,846 a year in state taxes. This goes without saying that despite the $5,000 spent by Medi-Cal, other services such as CalFresh, the state food aid program, and other benefits that are billed on behalf of children born in the United States.
Trump-era Republicans portray illegal immigrants as financial drains and focus on the difference between the high costs of services used and the relatively low taxes caused by even a single working individual.
“Newsom will double the CA by bankrupting its own CA by providing free, universal health care to illegal immigrants.” I said Rep. Bill Essayli of R-Corona in response to the governor’s conversation. “He’s not worthy of becoming governor, needless to say!”
