Sky Sports’ Gary Neville expressed regret at Manchester United’s dismal performance in their 2-0 loss to Newcastle. This is what Neville said live on joint commentary…
sky sports Pundit Neville was co-commentary at Old Trafford and witnessed yet another disastrous performance by his former team.
Here’s how the Manchester United legend reacted as the match unfolded before his eyes…
Before the game…
“They can’t produce great performances from where they are now, and I understand that.
“But what I’m saying is, you need to get a glimpse of what you like and this idea that Ruben Amorim has. That they’re struggling to get time on the practice pitch. I know, but you want to do it.” Game by game, I think they’re actually going to start to settle into a pattern of play somehow, but we haven’t seen that yet.
“One thing I can say is that Ruben Amorim probably needs to pick 11 and stick with it.”
Turn on if Amorim makes too many changes.
“He hasn’t decided on a team yet. Is it time to create stability? The players don’t understand his ideas, but how difficult is it if the players haven’t developed a pattern of playing together? Is it?”
As to whether there were any positive results under Amorim.
“They took a setback, but I hope it’s a setback to move forward.
“There are very few positives in the first few weeks.
“Probably the most positive thing is that he understands the players for what they really are and we haven’t gotten that much backlash that makes him think they’re better than them.
“I think he thought it was a big job, but it’s a tough job, and he realized that early on in his position of power and strength.”
Regarding Manchester United’s difficulties in recruiting in the summer
“What surprised me was that when Manchester United signed those three or four players in the summer, I didn’t hear anyone say, ‘Manchester United’s transfer window was terrible.’ .
“I’m shocked at how poor their players have been in the early months.
“I’ve said before that this club is a graveyard for players who came with a certain reputation, and it’s happening again.
“In the summer when Yoro, De Ligt, Ugarte and Zirksee arrived, no one said United weren’t signing half-baked players. The problem is, here they are in red shirts. If you look at it, then you’re going to be Manchester United.” They look like a worse team, which is strange.”
Regarding Isaac’s first goal…
“Casemiro and [Christian] Eriksen doesn’t have the legs to move around.
“Manchester United had three centre-halves…there are deflections, but one of them has to pick up the dangerous man.
“Manchester United’s confidence has been shattered.
“Look at Martinez. He has to be aggressive next to him. He has to do better.”
“Maguire looks back and can’t believe he’s invincible. Martinez has to get his body together.”
Right after that, when Isaac missed a one-on-one…
“What?!
“Sure he has to fire [Andre] Onana to every corner.
“but [Lisandro] Martinez’s defense was terrible. ”
When Joelinton made it 2-0…
“It’s almost a copy.
“Casemiro and Eriksen shouldn’t play together in the Premier League. It’s that simple.”
As the first half progresses…
“Newcastle are thrashing Manchester United. It’s a fisticuffs.”
About failed team selection
“When I looked at Manchester United’s starting lineup, I couldn’t help but think it would be very difficult for this team to play well.
“The two wing-backs aren’t very good on the attacking side of the pitch. The two central midfielders can’t run. The back three don’t have legs.” [Joshua] Zirkzee is not unbalanced. [Rasmus] Hojuland.
“You only have Amado.” [Diallo] Someone who you think might be able to do something.
About Newcastle’s advantage
“Newcastle are having the time of their lives, they should be able to get three or four points up.
“They were just awful. You’re looking at the worst pound-for-pound team in the country.
”[Diogo] Dalot is very ambitious and has risen to that level, but his options as a full-back are limited.
“I’m watching [Ruben] Amorim and he must be thinking, “What am I watching?”
“Among them, the only one who can be said to be okay under Amorim is Dalot. [Noussair] Mazrawi and Ahmad. ”
When Zirksee came on as a substitute in the 33rd minute…
“I have to feel sorry for him.
“He’s basically been supported by his own fans, which is terrible.
“I’ve never seen anything like that at Old Trafford.
“That would be cruel to him. I don’t think he went back to get Lucozade.”
About value for money…
“They were all just awful. You’re looking at the worst pound-for-pound team in the country.”
My thoughts on the second half…
“I was surprised there wasn’t a change at half-time, I thought there would be a change.
“The amount of changes Manchester United make to their back five during the game and from game to game is incredible.
“It was a struggle for Casemiro and for Martinez.
“Since [Kobbie] The introduction of Maynou has turned things around for Manchester United.
“The first 30 minutes were very embarrassing, as you can see.”
Manchester United are having trouble scoring goals…
“The graphics shown by Jamie Carragher before the game showed that Manchester United were not scoring from open play when they played against Mazraoui and Dalot, who are more defensive wing-backs.
“This is tragic and it’s happening again before our eyes.”
About Isaac the Player of the Match…
“I know this is obvious, but Isaac is an incredible player.
“This guy won the game in the first 20 minutes.”
The future of Manchester United
“These are worrying times for Manchester United and Amorim.
“He knew it was a big job, but I think it’s much bigger than he imagined.”
