John Higgins became just the second snooker player to reach 1,000 career centuries, despite losing at the English Open in Brentwood.
The 49-year-old Scotsman achieved the feat with breaks of 108 and 105 in the third and fifth frames of his quarter-final match against Mark Allen.
But it wasn’t enough to seal the win and boost his chances of staying in the Top 16. Allen recorded a personal best of 100 in the first frame and held on in a tough final frame to win 4-3.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is the only player to reach the four-figure century milestone, with his win over Neil Robertson in the final frame of the 2019 Players Championship final.
Earlier, Judd Trump came from behind to beat Fan Zhengyi 4-2 and set up a quarter-final encounter with China’s Wu Yize.
The world number one won three straight frames and made a break of 101 to extend his winning streak and move one step closer to joining O’Sullivan and Higgins in the 1,000-match club.
Mark Selby kept his cool to beat Shi Jiahui 4-3 to book a quarter-final against India’s Ishpreet Singh Chadha, who also won a deciding final frame against China’s He Guoqiang.
