Speaking from the Oval Office, President Biden cemented the tradition of presidential greatness by emphasizing his commitment to putting country before himself.
Biden said:
We are a great nation because we are good people. When you elected me to this office, I promised you that I would always be honest with you. The truth is, the sacred cause of our nation is bigger than any one of us. Those of us who care about that cause care about it very dearly. We must unite to defend it. You see, these past few weeks have made it clear to me that we need to unite our party in this important effort. I believe that my record as President, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all of these things merit a second term. But I will not let anything get in the way of defending our democracy, and that includes personal ambition. So I have decided that the best way to move forward is to pass the baton to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our country. I know there is a time and a place for years of experience in public service. There is also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices. Yes, younger voices. That time and place is now.

In just a few short months, the American people will choose the future course of America. I have made my choice. I have voiced my opinion. I want to thank our great Vice President, Kamala Harris. She is experienced, tough, and capable. She has been a great partner for me and a great leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you, the American people.
…….
The preservation of our republic now rests in your hands. My fellow Americans, it has been the privilege of my life to serve this country for more than 50 years. There is nowhere on earth that a stuttering kid from humble origins in Scranton, Pennsylvania, could one day sit behind a determined desk in the Oval Office as President of the United States. And here I am. That’s what’s special about America. We are a nation of hope and possibility. Dreamers and doers. Ordinary Americans achieving extraordinary things. I, like so many others, give my heart and soul to my country. I’ve been blessed a million times over and come back with love and support. I hope you have some idea of just how great the blessing is. I thank you. The great thing about America is that it is not ruled by kings or dictators, but by the people. History is in your hands. Power is in your hands. The American ideal is in your hands. You must stay safe. Keep the faith and remember who we are. We are the United States of America.

President Biden is a good man with a good heart who has always loved his country and put it first. All of these qualities were on display in his speech. Biden knew that saving the country was more important than staying in the race and trying to prove the doubters wrong. The risk to the country was too great, but even if it wasn’t, Joe Biden probably would have decided to step aside anyway because that’s who he is.
If Vice President Harris wins in November, Biden will have a long victory/farewell parade. A common criterion for evaluating presidents is whether they leave the country in a better state than when they took office.
In Biden’s case, the answer is a resounding “yes,” and that’s why he will be remembered as one of the great presidents in history.
