Hot Dog Pretzel – This traditional American snack of mini hot dogs wrapped in fluffy pretzels is the best. It’s the perfect party food or a fun snack for kids. Plus, it’s super cute! 🤩

Who doesn’t love homemade pretzels? They’re fluffy, cute, and kind of fancy, and they elevate hot dogs from “kids food” to a sophisticated appetizer. Bring them to a party and they’ll fly off the platter in no time.

To be honest, it’s not that hard to make either – you just make the pretzel dough, wrap the hot dogs in them, and bake them – so this recipe isn’t as time-consuming as it sounds.

Delicious hot dog pretzels on a plate

The aesthetics of the pretzel hot dog

Want to make a photogenic pretzel dog that you can show off on Instagram? The secret to a fancy pretzel crust is to dip the wrapped hot dog in boiling baking soda water before grilling. This caramelizes the pretzel dog and turns it a deep brown color. Admittedly, the original pretzel recipe calls for caustic soda, which is not kid-friendly.

If you’re making something fancy, don’t forget to soak them in baking soda. However, if you’re making them for the 5th time this week because your kids love them, you can bake them without soaking them. Trust me, it’s not the end of the world and it tastes amazing! 😅

Recipe Ingredients

  1. Ingredients for pretzels – Make a dough with milk, sugar, dry yeast, flour, butter and salt.
  2. hot dog – Full or cocktail size hot dogs work well for this recipe. Beef, pork, or chicken hot dogs also work well.
  3. baking soda – A quick dip of the dough into boiling water with baking soda will turn your pretzels into pretzels.
  4. egg – To get a nice shine on your pretzels, you’ll need an egg for the egg wash.
  5. Finishing touch – You can add your favorite toppings like kosher salt flakes, sesame seeds, parsley flakes, garlic, etc. to make it even more special.

How to make hot dog pretzels

Activate the yeast, make the dough, and prepare the dogs

  • Liquid ingredients – Combine milk, butter, sugar and salt in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for about 1 minute. Stir until sugar and butter are melted. Be careful not to get it too hot, as you may kill the yeast.
  • make material – Add all ingredients to the yeast mix and mix on medium heat for 2 minutes. Next, add about 4½ cups of flour and continue mixing until you get a soft dough that starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl. (Photo 2)
  • Knead – Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-6 minutes. (Photo 3)
  • rise – Place the pretzel dough in a greased bowl, cover loosely with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 to 2 hours or until the dough has doubled in size.
  • make pretzels – Punch the dough down onto a lightly floured work surface. Divide the dough into 18 to 20 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and wrap it around a hot dog or sausage.

Recipe Variations

  1. Swap out the hot dogs, you can make it with any sausage you like, so choose your favorite.
  2. Make it an all-purpose pretzel. Occasionally, 1 teaspoon Everything Bagel Seasoning Mix this into the egg mixture before baking and it’s pretty tasty, if I do say so myself!
  3. Go big on cheese. Wrap a hot dog with shredded cheddar (or your favorite cheese). Bake and you’ll have a fluffy pretzel hot dog bun with melted cheese. 🤤
  4. You can also use homemade dinner rolls instead of pretzels.

Tips and Tricks

  1. If the dough is too sticky at first, add more flour a little at a time until it becomes a soft dough.
  2. If you only have regular hot dogs and want mini pretzel dogs, cut them in half before wrapping them. They’ll be a little bigger than bite-sized, but still cute.
  3. To streamline the soaking process, place 2-3 pretzels on a large slotted spoon. Submerge the pretzels in the water for 30 seconds, then pull them straight up onto the same spoon.

Preliminary steps

It tastes amazing fresh out of the oven, but you can make it the day before and reheat it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes, refrigerating it in an airtight container until then, or you can freeze it for up to 3 months and reheat it the same way.

How to serve and store

It’s up to you whether you want to serve these tasty treats straight out of the oven or at room temperature, and don’t forget to prepare a fun dipping sauce.

Leftover pretzel hot dogs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or reheated in the oven or microwave.
