During last year’s short break, I missed to present the publication of this exciting contribution to film studies, visual arts studies and related fields in the Caribbean and Latin America. Cine Boricua 2000-2024: Nación, Identadad y Resistencia en lacinematografÃapuertorriqueñadeficcióndelsiglo xxi [BORICUA CINEMA 2000-2024: Nation, Identity, and Resistance in 21st-Century Puerto Rican Fiction Cinema] (Publicaciones Gaviota, 2024) By Rosana L. DÃaz Zambrana.
explanation: Cine Boricua 2000-2024: Nación, Identadad y Resistencia en lacinematografÃapuertorriqueñadeficcióndelsiglo xxi It provides a detailed investigation into the trends, themes, and obsessions that shaped modern Puerto Rican films. Through an analysis of 107 films, the book explores the diverse ways in which “national” films reflect unique stamps and their own language, social fear, gender identity, stages of women’s empowerment, crises, racial and social exclusion discourses, and the experiences of marginalized subjects such as children, young people, and young people. It also tackles the aftermath of colonialism, migration and neoliberal practices.
Accessible yet rigorous discussion, Cine Boricua… We invite scholars and the general public to reflect the fundamental role film plays in constructing collective cultural identities, preserving historical memory, and building multiple forms of resistance within colonial and globalized contexts. A homage to the richness and diversity of Puerto Rican cinema, the book is presented as an important piece to understand the complexity and tension of art forms in constant evolution. An essential quest to define the present and future of Puerto Rico’s Seventh Art.
