Elon Musk announced his brain computer interface implant startup when it was live streamed on YouTube on Monday at Wisconsin City Hall Neuralink will perform the first human implants blinded, aimed at restoring the vision of individuals in blind by the end of 2025.
Musk was asked by a member of the audience when he imagined “solving blindness and bringing it to the public.”
“Neuralink had a work device in Monkeys that we call blind,” Musk says. “It’s working well, and the monkeys have been healthy for a few years.”
Blind, that The FDA breakthrough device designation last September is an implant intended to restore vision in blind individuals.
Blindsites embed microelectrode arrays in the visual cortex of the human brain. The array then activates the neurons and provides the individual with a visual image.
“We hope to do our first device implants for humans later this year, and we can see people who are completely blind,” Musk said.
He said he wanted to set expectations appropriately, explaining that individual vision would initially be low resolution “like Atari graphics.”
“It starts with a very low Res, but then I work overtime and I think the implant will ultimately allow for superhuman vision, so that’s pretty cool,” Musk said.
Bigger trends
Last year, Musk I wrote it on x That blindness can be seen by people who have lost both eyes and optic nerves, as long as the visual cortex is intact. He said that it can even be seen for the first time by blind people since birth.
The visual cortex is the part of the brain that receives and processes visual information from the retina.
“In the end, there’s a possibility for that [to] It is better than natural vision and can also be seen in infrared, ultraviolet, or radar wavelengths. [Star Trek’s character] Geordi La Forge,” Musk wrote.
NeuralInk has submitted an application In early March, together with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the terms “telepathy,” “blindsight,” and “telekinesis.”
Applications are related to blindness and visual impairment Neuralink’s first product, telepathya brain computer interface that allows users to control devices in their own way, and telekinesisthe term mask was compatible with telepathy related to controlling a device using one’s mind.
