The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Hopfield and Jeffrey Hinton. “For the fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said in a press release this morning that this year’s winners “used the tools of physics to develop methods that are the basis for today’s powerful machine learning.”
Hopfield at Princeton University has created a type of memory that can store and reconstruct patterns in data. Hinton at the University of Toronto has invented a way to autonomously find properties in such data.
The winner will share the prize of 11 million Swedish kroner, or approximately $1 million.
This is a developing story and will be updated throughout the day.
