Coca cola cake – A delicious recipe that combines rich chocolate flavor with a light and moist cake. Add a rich Coca-Cola glaze to create the perfect dessert. 🤩
Coca-Cola cake has been a common sight in Southern kitchens since the 1950s, and there’s a reason for that: adding Coca-Cola and buttermilk to the batter makes for a super moist cake every time.
Plus, it’s a chocolate lover’s dream! The Chocolate Coca-Cola Cake is basically Devil’s Cake It has a subtle soda flavor and is really tasty!
Why put Coca-Cola in chocolate cake?
Susie Homemaker has long embraced convenience in the kitchen, so when soda pop became popular, it was only a matter of time before it started making its way into cake recipes. The carbonation makes the cake light and fluffy and helps it rise. Plus, it saves you money and eliminates the need to go to Cracker Barrel for chocolate cake with Coca-Cola in it.
Pouring a bottle of soda into your cake mix almost always saves you time and money. In fact, many cake + soda recipes leave out the eggs, oil, and sometimes even baking soda. In this recipe, we add this classic carbonated drink, but to enhance the classic cake ingredients, not replace them.
Ingredients List
- coca cola – The star of this sheet cake is cola (or store-bought cola), which makes the cake light and fluffy. The finished product doesn’t taste like Coca-Cola, but it does add a nice, subtle flavor. 👌
- Cake Ingredients – Gather the basic ingredients for making a cake (flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, butter, eggs, vanilla extract).
- Cocoa powder – To give this cake a delicious chocolate flavor, prepare your favorite unsweetened cocoa powder. The higher the quality of the powder, the tastier the cake will be.
- Buttermilk – Buttermilk adds moisture and sourness to the cake.
- cinnamon is an optional ingredient, but I love how it impacts the overall flavor of this cake.
- Chocolate Coca-Cola Glaze – There’s no harm in being extravagant: add cola, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder along with the butter to make it creamy.

Recipe Ideas
- Use a different soda. If you want to enjoy a subtle change of flavor, try making this cake with Cherry Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, or any other favorite soda.
- Add marshmallowsMany Coca-Cola cake recipes call for adding 1 cup of mini marshmallows to the batter before baking, I prefer this cake without the marshmallows but you can add them if you like.
- Top with nuts. Walnuts, pecans, or Candied Pecans Go ahead and try it. It adds some crunch. Plus, nuts and chocolate are always a good combination. 😉
- Coca-Cola cake made with cake mixUse two 13.5-ounce boxes of chocolate cake mix in place of flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. You can adjust the consistency of the cake batter by simply adding a teaspoon or two of Coca-Cola.
Tips and Tricks
- If the glaze is too thick, gradually add more Coca-Cola (one teaspoon at a time) until it reaches your desired thickness. If the glaze is too thin, add a bit more sifted powdered sugar.
- For a smoother batter, warm the eggs and buttermilk to room temperature.
- Don’t use flat soda – we need the bubbles to lighten the cake! 🫧
