Caroline Dubois is aiming to become the WBC lightweight world champion and is also targeting Irish boxing legend Katie Taylor, who currently holds that belt.
Dubois will face Mayra Moneo for the WBC interim lightweight title on Saturday, August 3rd. Sky Sports.
But the London native has her sights set on the 135-pound world championship, a weight class she still holds, albeit competing at super lightweight 140. Taylor is now the undisputed world champion, having suffered her only professional defeat at the hands of Chantelle Cameron.
A win over Moneo would make Dubois the mandatory challenger for the WBC lightweight world title.
“You have a veteran fighter holding onto a belt that he hasn’t fought for in over a year, and for a guy like me, it’s frustrating because you’re just waiting for someone else to decide,” Dubois said. Sky Sports.
“The winner of this fight will be obligated to fight Katie Taylor. It’s a good situation so we’ll see what happens.”
Taylor was also the undisputed champion at lightweight. She vacated the IBF and WBO titles but still holds the WBA and WBC titles at 135 pounds. Taylor is scheduled to fight Amanda Serrano at 140 pounds later this year.
“She’s holding the belt hostage. It’s very frustrating for a guy like me and for someone in my position, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Either she gives it back or, in my next fight, God bless me, I’ll fight her,” Dubois declared. “It’s going to be a massive fight.”
“Everybody wants a big fish, and Katie is probably the biggest one for a long time,” he said.
“this [Moneo] Fighting is a must.
“if [Taylor] “If you don’t fight, you have to go,” Dubois continued. “We’re the new face.”
“I and other girls like me are the new faces taking on the position.”
“Violent and exciting”
Dubois will be determined to dominate Moneo when the pair meet at Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium on August 3.
The only defeat on the Uruguayan’s record is a disqualification by headbutt to mutual opponent and world title challenger Yanina Lezcano, who Dubois beat last year.
Dubois expects Moneo to use similarly aggressive tactics against her.
“I think once I start winning and winning easily, she’s going to lean into that. The only way she’s going to be successful is to be dirty and rough and try to beat me and all that. That’s the only way,” Dubois said.
The Briton believes it will all benefit her: “She’s aggressive, she’s non-stop, she fights with emotion and she just goes at you head on. I think it’s going to be a great match and great preparation for what’s next,” Dubois said.
But, she promises, “You’re going to see what you always see: the fierce, exciting, skilled and classy Caroline Dubois stepping into the ring and doing what I’ve always done: I’ll be going for the knockout and trying to create as much excitement as possible for the fans.”
“If he comes, he comes. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t. All I want is to beat Moneo to the punch, really find out where she is and let her know I’m on a higher level than him.”
