Important news about money and politics in the race for the White House
US President Joe Biden has called on Americans to “come together” and calm the political situation in the country following an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania.
“The political rhetoric in this country has become so heated,” Biden said in an extraordinary address to the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday night. “It’s time for calm, and we all have a responsibility to do so.”
“Disagreements are inevitable in an American democracy, it’s human nature. Politics should never be a battlefield, it should never be a killing field,” he said.
Former US President Biden rushed back to Washington from his Delaware Beach home on Saturday night after being shot in the ear. Trump briefly crouched, then rose to his feet in defiance, fists raised, and was hurriedly escorted off the stage and into a motorcade.
One person at the rally was shot to death and the gunman also died, but the motive has not been made clear.
After spending the night at his New Jersey golf club, Trump headed to Wisconsin on Sunday ahead of the Republican National Convention this week where he will formally nominate himself as the presidential candidate.
