The biggest expansion Twister There is not a single spinning scene on the screen, the film takes surprising turns far beyond what you would expect. Twister It’s packed with high-octane, special effects-driven action scenes, including a tornado that destroys every home, hotel, and occasionally a human being, but it prioritizes life in a way that wasn’t present in the 1996 original: We care about who lives and who dies, and its heartfelt humanity elevates the film’s core. Twister In every sense.
Well, maybe that’s to be expected considering the director. Twister The film is directed by Oscar-winning director Lee Isaac Chung. Minari. Minari A celebration of life and family, Twisterjust from a different perspective. It features a series of unconventional families who all love to chase tornadoes for different, sometimes conflicting reasons: for some, it’s science. For others, it’s the thrill. And for the real scum, it’s the money. But… TwisterMark L. Smith’s “Operation Tornado” doesn’t just stick to those common categories and expectations – it’s the intriguing and sometimes shocking interrelationships of who’s in Operation Tornado and why that make the story fresh and fascinating.
The story revolves around Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a meteorologist living in New York, who is still trying to get over an unspeakable tragedy that occurred the last time she was chasing a tornado. But when her best friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) comes to visit her with one more chance to change things, Kate reluctantly returns to chasing. She then meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a self-proclaimed “tornado marshal” and YouTube blogger with over a million subscribers. Tyler is sassy and annoying, but also very charming, and soon the two get into an argument over who is the best at spotting tornadoes.
In the first act, Twister It plays out pretty much exactly like the original – Kate and Javi’s team chase tornadoes for science, Tyler chases them for glory, and the two teams battle it out against each other. There’s a lot of flirting, a lot of running around and through big tornadoes, and it’s just so entertaining. But soon a truth is revealed that ultimately leads to Kate and Tyler teaming up, and that’s where the movie takes a different direction.
When Tyler and Kate team up, not only does their somewhat titanic romance take center stage, they also open up and become more dynamic and vulnerable. We care about them and want to see them together, which makes what they’re trying to do even more interesting. Kate continues to believe she can stop the tornado, and Tyler thinks he has the final piece of the puzzle. It also helps that Powell is as charismatic and lovable as ever, and Edgar-Jones finds a good balance in his character, smart and confident but also carrying a heavy trauma.
These are all good things, but the best thing is Twister The film has a scientific goal (which is sometimes over-explained), but that goal is ignored when it comes up against the idea that that goal might take people’s lives. Kate, Tyler, and other characters do whatever it takes to save lives, sometimes literally. Multiple times throughout the film, perhaps too many times, characters set out to do something but have to stop to help those in danger. This repetition highlights what Chung clearly feels is the film’s greatest lesson: regardless of what the characters want, and no matter how exhilarating it may be to see a tornado on screen, tornadoes are dangerous, destructive killers to be revered and feared.
The film is greatly strengthened by a motley cast of supporting actors who add further flavor to the film, and like the 1996 original, it features a number of big name and well-known actors. noKiernan Shipka Mad Men and Long legsHarry Hadden Paton Downton Abbey and crownSasha Lane American Honey and LokiDarryl McCormack Peaky BlindersTunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, etc. But the most famous is Love bleeds and The Mandalorianand Superman himself, David Corenswet, in his most un-Superman role yet. The characters are all quirky, strange and fascinating, but Corenswet may be the most memorable for the depths of his hatred.
The film’s great appeal lies in its dynamic and exciting supporting cast and two stable leading actors. Twister To be honest, that was my biggest disappointment with the new release. TwisterI was a little annoyed at how few connections there are to the first film (there is one direct connection, but it’s never explained), but most people who don’t bow at the shrine of Jan de Bont, Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt will probably see that as a good thing.
That’s the atmosphere Twister What it’s trying to do is something unique. The first movie was classic rock, this one is country rock. That movie was mostly straight, this one is taking us on a bit more of an emotional and ethical journey. And, of course, that movie was about saving lives, but… Twister The film zeros in on this theme, building to a spectacularly surprising finale that provides some genuine nail-biting tension and a deeply satisfying ending.
there is nothing Twister is very unique, but it does everything right. You go in to be entertained, and you get a little extra fun on top of that. The solid story and character development makes us respect these characters, not the series. I’m eager to see what happens next for Tyler, Kate, and the crew, but I didn’t expect it at all. There are plenty of surprises, to be sure.
Twister It hits theaters on Friday
