Write Warz is the recently launched debut title of Boltz Entertainment, a cooperative game that turns the act of storytelling into a strategic (and often entertaining) war against opponents. Based on the tradition of Jackbox-style titles such as Quiplash and Rifftrax, Write Warz instead offers a long-form means of storytelling between friends. The game launched on Steam in Early Access on March 6th and has horror and pirate-based themes.
Each game within Write Warz is a round-robin style iteration in which the player provides one or two sentences each for every round. The winner’s writing includes stories and more. The prompts for each story are determined by the in-game “settings,” namely pirate-themed or horror-themed. You can buff or debuff selected yourself and other players. Depending on the type of game you choose, there may be other complications. For example, additional targets or round attacks in word shapes that players can use to reduce the time and number of words of their opponent.
Richard Boltz, CEO of Boltz Entertainment, said on GamesBeat about the origins of the game, particularly the way his father told him, “We don’t have cell phones because this is the 70s. So they’re not going to have any phones. What they did was that they had these ledgers in their work shifts. They had two people at work and after 8 or 10 hours, two new people who soften them. When two new people entered the shift in work, they had a ledger with the sentences written inside, and two new people added two new sentences to the story. This lasted throughout the week and was what they were most looking forward to in their entire shift. It was a very hit in my dad’s small work area and the crew made that story over the weekend. We decided to build a ship that everyone read.”
Beat the writer’s block with the help of friends
Currently, the game has two themes, or different kinds of stories for players to write. Horror borrows it from a Lovecraft style novel for its prompts. And there are prompts about ocean adventures, things that take on stories on the high seas. According to the game’s Steam page, Boltz has created other themes, including an anime-inspired Elf vs. Samurai theme. For example, each round has a unique mechanic that shakes gameplay. Pirate Adventure, for example, has a round mechanic that allows players to purchase offensive or defensive items to use rounds with each other.
Boltz also pointed out that Write Warz doesn’t necessarily have to be played in a party environment. The game has both online matchmaking for random people and comfortable play, and AI bots trained in language models that act as opponents. Both came from player feedback. “When I bring the demo online, I realized that not many people necessarily have a group of friends to play with. I added AI to the game if necessary. There aren’t enough players, so If you want to play against a bot, you can play the game yourself. If you are in a custom game and only two people but you want to play with six people, you can add an AI bot and interact with it like a human There are over 30 writing styles that bots use, as they sometimes program custom personalities into the game. Some bots rhyme. Some bots are the ones that are Greek philosophers. You’ll write like that. Some of them would write like their Tolkien. People wanted it in the game, so we added it.”
The developers also work on other items players want, such as streamer integration and potential drinking game modes. “We’ve heard everything because you need to have this at school and enjoy creative writing.” “You need to have a drinking mode.” . If there is a group of writers who have a block of writers, they can all sit here and go into custom game modes and try to figure out what to write next. Can be used for scripting and film production. The game has a million uses and is about to check the checkbox for everyone. ”
