Animal. Brawler. X-Man. Meet the fearsome and powerful Wolverine.
Wolverine’s Origin
James Howlett was born in Alberta, Canada in the late 90s. He suffered from many health problems. One day, his mutant abilities were triggered when gardener Thomas Logan shot his father. In retaliation, James slashed Thomas with his newly retractable bone claws, leaving him to die. Through this incident, James learned that Thomas was in fact his real father. He left Alberta with his friend Rose O’Hara, eventually finding safe haven in a stone quarry. James decided to use the name Logan instead.
He becomes healthy thanks to his mutant abilities and develops animalistic senses, superior hearing and the ability to recognize smells. His healing ability also erases all traumatic experiences from Logan’s memory, so he always finds himself unable to remember past events. He also becomes more violent in the process, which results in Rose meeting the worst end of a violent but accidental explosion, leading to her death.
To deal with his own aggression, Logan decided to take part in cage fights, which earned him the nickname “Wolverine.”
Back to reality
Logan traveled the world and participated as a soldier in almost every major conflict, including World War I, World War II, the Spanish Civil War, and the Vietnam War. While on the run, he is abducted by a Canadian super soldier program known as Weapon X. He was selected as an ideal candidate because he possessed a healing factor, which resulted in adamantium fused to his skeleton. The operation was successful, making Logan more invulnerable and armed with retractable adamantium claws.
“I’m the best at what I do, but the things I’m best at aren’t very good.”
Wolverine (Marvel Unlimited)
Logan’s missions with Weapon X include stopping the Hulk and killing the entire population of a small town. He breaks out of the Weapon X program and kills almost everyone in the facility. What Logan does not realize is that the Weapon X program has kept his DNA and used it to create clones.
Friends and Foes
Wolverine finds a home with the X-Men, a group of mutants led by Professor Charles Xavier. There he meets other mutants such as Storm and Beast. Wolverine finds himself in a love triangle with Cyclops, who competes for the attention of the beautiful telepathic Dr. Jean Grey. Wolverine teams up with X-Force, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and even the Knights of Apocalypse. He even offers to help Black Panther in Wakanda.
Wolverine has had numerous enemies, including Victor Creed/Sabretooth, who has retractable claws and healing abilities. Magneto stripped the adamantium from Logan’s body at one point. Hydra brainwashed Wolverine at one point. Wolverine ended up facing many members of the infamous Brotherhood of Mutants. A virus took away Wolverine’s healing abilities, making him a target for all his enemies. As a result, he turned to his creator, Dr. Cornelius, for help. After learning that the Weapon X program was not yet over, Wolverine tried to end it, which resulted in his death and someone else taking over Wolverine’s position. Guess who it was?
