Big budgets, star rading and special effects Bonanzas no longer guarantee a hit.

However, the box office landscape was different in 2017. rock When people still thought Star Wars was on the rise, Marvel brought in a huge audience, Endgame crescendo.

In that environment, the world’s biggest star has released a super sexy, high concept, sci-fi action flick based on beloved source material, with a very budget, gorgeous look. The reported production budget is $110-1.8 million plus $60 million in marketing, with Paramount looking to become a starter in the global franchise and wants rivals matrix$460 million worldwide since 1999.

The world responded to the film with anger and condemnation, but that wasn’t the only problem.

This is the reason Shell’s Ghost We’re screwed.

Steven Spielberg was a mega fan of the classic 1995 animated film Shell’s Ghost. At the time, he called anime “one of the most visionary sci-fi films he’d ever made,” and his passion drove DreamWorks to the rights of competitors like Sony.

So in 2008, his company DreamWorks acquired the right to turn it into a live-action film.

It was difficult to convert it to a usable script. Many writers were brought in and various approaches were tested. None of them worked.

The biggest problem was that DreamWorks wanted something accessible to mass audience consumption, and it proved impossible to do so while still remaining true to the source.

The highly acclaimed R, 1995 anime won just $2 million worldwide, but it had cult supporters. Paramount needed hits to justify the film’s budget and broke targeting at least $400 million worldwide.

Scarlett Johansson

Finally, they hired the man behind him, Coach Rupert Sanders. Snow White and the Huntsman.

His solution was to stay true to the visual fidelity of the anime, while focusing more on the action as a way to accommodate a general audience.

Saunders shot in New Zealand and Hong Kong, recreating the animated streetscape using 3,000 CGI shots and a practical set, and Weta Workshop designed a major bodysuit. The script sets a work that is more like Geisha Robot Battle than a philosophy that has a lot of dialogue in anime.

Scarlett Johansson joined the project in 2015, playing Major, the film’s lead.

Thanks to playing Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson reached the peak of fame as an action icon in 2015, investing that fame in an edgy sci-fi project.

Major bodysuits were designed to mimic the anime’s nude aesthetics, but avoided the original R-rated nudes and used opaque materials to ensure a PG-13 rating.

Scarlett Johansson took many such risks during this part of her career.

In 2013, she received praise for her role in an indie sci-fi film Under the skinshe plays an alien eating a man before investing in the victim. Made for $13 million, the film sold $7 million, but won critical acclaim for its nude scene in Johansson, which sparked debates about art and exploitation.

Scarlett Johansson

If Johansson doesn’t have anything else, he deserves more career credits for his willingness to take big risks. She turned down a safer role Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Jurassic World Pursuing Shell’s Ghostbetting on the possibility of redefineing her as a sci-fi lead.

So she would have been a natural fit Shell’s GhostIf she was Japanese, I’d lead.

Breaking News: Scarlett Johansson is not in Japanese. Meanwhile, the characters in both the anime version and the original manga version of the story are definitely like that.

I’ll talk about that soon.

First, let’s take a look at the movies they’ve finished. It’s actually, well, pretty good, as it was purely examined as entertainment isolated from the controversy.

Shell’s Ghost Cybernetic enhancements are commonplace and take place in a dystopian future where humans merge with machines. This setting is drawn from the Hong Kong skyline and 1.5 million LED lights are used to create the city’s holographic billboards.

A neon-lit city sprawl, the city is a hub of technological advancement and business power. Production designer Jan Roelfs has built 12 practical sets, including the 40-foot-tall Hanka Robotics Lab, laying a world full of CGI.

The story focuses on the philosophical concepts of “ghosts,” what they call human consciousness and soul, and on the “shell,” physical or sometimes cybernetic bodies.

This concept has been simplified from the anime. The anime explored transhumanism through discussions about the sense of AI, focusing on the crisis of the Major’s personal identity.

Scarlett Johansson plays the first major of her kind. It is the human brain that is housed in a completely synthesized body after a tragic accident kills her. The opening sequence for the film, which shows her creation, used 1,200 CGI frames and cost just $5 million.

Yes, it’s a little similar Robocop.

But it goes in a completely different direction. where Robocop Satire corporate greed, Shell’s Ghost Drops the political subtext of anime about government surveillance, but explores memory and autonomy.

Taking over the halt of cyberterrorists, the main battle fights mysterious hackers and assassinates the handkerchief scientist by manipulating implants.

As a massive investigation, her system malfunctions – a flash of unfamiliar memories – lies in the hidden past.

Her quiz pursuit reveals a plot tied to an experiment with Hanker’s consciousness, forcing the Major to question her identity and autonomy.

Blending cyberpunk action with existential questions, the film is as visually stunning as a 1995 anime adaptation, but not philosophical.

As an action film, it is a wild ride, a unique experience, and it deserves praise for what it accomplished. The film’s Tank Battle Finale recreates the anime’s iconic climax, costing $10 million and required a $400 extra.

It was a huge production.

If there were no anime adaptations, I think it’s very likely we’re talking about it. Shell’s Ghost As a cult classic action film. Instead, it is destined to be fair or unfair, labelled as forever stupid and racist.

From the moment Scarlett Johansson was announced Shell’s GhostThe world was surprised with the loyal fans and those who had never seen anime, but wanted to win the politics of it.

To show how truly ignorant they are, Paramount and DreamWorks are rumoured to have responded to their anger by considering using CGI’s “race swapping” technology to make Johansson look more Asian.

Thankfully, it never happened. Instead, Paramount cast Japanese actors like Tuhi Kitano and Kaori Momo in supporting the role to add asensibilities, which did little to quell the controversy.

Filmed in June 2016, Paramount shifted its focus to the visuals of the film, betting $250,000 on Super Bowl ads.

Perhaps they thought by the time it came out, the controversy would run its course and be allowed to fail or succeed based on whether the film was good or not. The studio predicted a $40 million opening weekend in the country, depositing its banks into a 3D screening of Johansson’s star power and films that account for 30% of ticket sales.

But there’s no denying that the script made fun of things. The final script, praised by the three writers, cut the anime’s 20-minute philosophical arguments to less than five minutes, replacing them with an outspoken revenge plot.

Mixing stories and manga elements, 1995 anime, and Standalone complexsome people have been incoherent and fails to satisfy purists or attract new audiences. The 2016 Test Screening won 65/100, below Paramount’s 80/100 target, prompting a $8 million last-minute re-shoot.

Negative topics were everywhere, and they drove the audience away. A 2017 YouGov poll found that 60% of potential viewers were aware of the whitewash controversy. 25% say they are less likely to watch the movie.

Released on March 31, 2017, the film was released much past the peak of interest in cyberpunk created by matrix The early 2000s. The big movie there is Boss’ baby With a $50 million opening beauty and the beast I’ll make $90.4 million in the third week.

The film opened for just $19 million and alienated a core fanbase that could help give it feet long enough to become a cult hit.

The film’s trailer highlighted the existential themes of the story and the actions it took to the themes that made it unique. Without it, it would have just seemed like another action movie matrix.

The toxic combination of casting backlash, critical lukewarm water, fierce competition, oversized budgets, and failure to resonate with either fans or casual viewers destined for the film. The film’s 3.9/10 IMDB rating and C+ Cinemascore reflect a mixed response from viewers, with 40% of ticket buyers cited Johansson’s casting as a negative factor.

Perhaps you’ll never get another live action Shell’s Ghost Adaptation. And that’s a shame. Because fans deserve a faithful view of the story. Paramount’s losses kill the sequel’s plan and have since pursued IP. Pokemon or Sonic the hedgehoggot a successful adaptation.

But maybe Shell’s Ghost Deserves more trust. The box office failure has led us to be exposed to much worse anime adaptations.

Shell’s Ghost They worked so hard, and Hollywood dumped a lot of money to make it happen.

It contrasts with the limp, budgetless live action adaptation that awful Netflix takes on Cowboy Bebopor the most forgotten in 2018 death note It’s hard not to wonder if the adaptation, and the world was too difficult Shell’s Ghost.

Scarlett Johansson Ghost in the Shell

Scarlett Johansson works hard every minute Shell’s Ghostand so are all the frames in the movie. She played 90% of the stunts and trained with a fight choreographer for six weeks John Wick‘s David Leitch.

It’s beautiful and bold, and the action is top notch.

Scarlett Johansson was not an inventive choice to play majors. This role was first offered to Margot Robbie. However, Robbie declined and preferred to play Harley Quinn Suicide Squadthere’s no chance she doesn’t regret it.

Maybe that was the right call, but remove the controversy Shell’s Ghost It’s a much better movie Suicide Squad.

Do we all want to adapt more faithfully? of course. But looking isolated, Shell’s Ghost It’s a well-made sci-fi movie. And unlike modern box office revenue, Captain America: A Boring New Worldat least it took a risk.
