American Catholic painter Karl Schmidt (1889-1989) made an attractive innovation in the use of colour. He writes extensively about the artist’s profession, seeking holiness by practicing art rather than the other way, defending three virtues of poverty, humility and purity as the necessity that all artists should follow. I insisted on that. He inspired artists from other media such as Hilaire Belloc and Hart Crane. He did all this while raising 10 children. Andrew de Sa, creative director of the Carl Schmitt Foundation, educates us about this artist who is content to draw obscurely for God.
