Liverpool captain Virgil van Dyke shows that “progress” has been “progress” over the much-anticipated new contract to keep him at Anfield.
The 33-year-old, like teammates Mohamed Sarah and Trent Alexander Arnold, are out of contract this summer, but he made it clear that his future could be nearing a resolution.
Van Dik was asked if there was any progress in the debate after the 3-2 Premier League defeat at Fulham after Sunday’s 3-2 Premier League defeat.
Promoting what that means, Holland International added:
“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again [at Fulham]. We wanted to reward them, but I ask them to be there again on Sunday and make the stadium a great venue like usual for us. ”
The runaway leader will face West Ham at Anfield on Sunday, clearing 11 points from second-place Arsenal, and it could only be weeks away from knowing his second title in six seasons.
However, the future of influential trio Van Dik, Sarah and Alexander Arnold has been a hot topic in recent weeks, with speculation that homemade talent Alexander Arnold could leave for Real Madrid, who sparked an angry response from the club’s support section.
Van Dijk’s comments could be better received, but he claims he is focused solely on his job of winning the league.
He states: “It’s definitely the mentality of our group, not finished work and now we have to recover physically and mentally and put our minds at home in West Ham.”
Carra: van dijk trading is what I’m most confident in
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carager speaks to Sky Sports News about Virgil Van Dik’s potential new deal:
“I think they get it on the line, and that’s what I feel most confident about.
“I had little confidence with Trent Alexander Arnold and Mo Salah, and Mo Salah is in the middle of both players.
“Virgil van Dick is because when he is the captain and certainly when things go wrong, he is almost the face of the club player to come out and talk, as the captain does.
“He’s always handled those situations really well, and the fact that he says he’s made a bit of progress makes him really optimistic that his signature will accomplish.”
Analysis: Van Dijk’s existence is just as important as ever
Sky Sports Laura Hunter:
Critics jump straight at Virgil van Dyke with the first hint of mistakes. And there was plenty of performances scattered with errors against Fulham over the weekend. However, the defender is not the only perpetrator, and the anomaly does not reduce his importance to Liverpool in the present or future.
This is the guy who played in the premier league in the season in the maximum minutes and is excellent in almost everything. As Arne Slot points out, “playing 50-60 games in a season has one or two moments where he could get better.”
Van Dik’s contract saga has been exaggerated by the simultaneous situation of Mo Sarah and Trent Alexander Arnold – were there any real doubts that the immediate 34-year-old stay would not be extended? Real Madrid smells Alexander Arnold, and while Sarah’s interest from Saudi Arabia seems endless, rumors have not emerged about Van Dik’s suitor. The exit felt the most likely outcome.
Nevertheless, Slot is pleased to unite one of his three precious assets. Just three weeks ago, the Dutch told a journalist he “doesn’t think” where his future lies. The public claim was ridiculous in hindsight, but perhaps it accelerated consultations. His Liverpool captain still has mileage.
