MANILA, PHILIPPINES – University of Santo Tomas fell victim to the University of the Philippines at the start of the second round of the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball.
The loss extends the Growling Tigers’ losing streak against the Fighting Maroons to eight, dating back to 2022 when Goldwyn Monteverde took over as UP’s head coach.

Despite the loss, UST remained on track to advance to the Final Four in fourth place, one game behind third-place East University.

Still, being in the top half of the table shouldn’t be a reason for the Tigers to feel comfortable at this stage of the tournament.
“I don’t think anything about it,” UST forward Mark Remit said in Filipino. “This is a new round. We’re back to zero here.”

Mo Tunkara had a near double-double in the game with 24 points and 9 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Fighting Maroons, who tied La Salle in first place with a 7-1 record.
UST’s duo of Nick Cabanero and Christian Manaitai also scored 17 and 12 points, respectively.
The road to the Final Four won’t be easy for the Tigers, who lost three of their last four games after starting 3-1. They will next face another powerhouse, defending champion La Salle, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.
