Interactive horror game Until Dawn is making its comeback this fall. The game that defined the genre in 2015 has been completely revamped with Unreal Engine 5, and the new version will be released on October 4th for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
The remake is being developed by Ballistic Moon, while the original creators, Supermassive Games, are currently working on other projects, including The Casting of Frank Stone. However, the studio said “The original [Until Dawn] This cinematic update enhances the visual storytelling and gives players a more intimate experience.”
What’s new in the Until Dawn remake?
Like its predecessor, the game is set on Mount Blackwood. Players control several characters and must survive the night as a mysterious figure orchestrates their moves to kill them. Ballistic Moon has stated that it did not intend to change the events of the single-player game, whose story resembles a classic slasher movie.
However, the remake of Until Dawn will feature updated character models, environments, interactable props, visual effects and animations to maximize the thriller cinematic experience on both PS5 and PC. The game will be “relit” using Unreal Engine 5’s rendering features, including ray tracing and enhanced materials, with a focus on a more atmospheric “modern horror” experience.

Visual improvements can be seen through textures, materials, rendering and animation performance, which collectively contribute to creating higher fidelity characters.
The game also features pre-rendered simulation techniques to create more realistic real-time fluids and an improved injury mask system, adding to the gore, plus all-new perspectives and camera angles.
“We want to bring characters and places to life by blending the cinematography of the original with the introduction of a modern third-person camera,” the studio explained. The camera’s flexibility allows it to capture key moments and tell the story from a perspective closer to the characters.
Ballistic Moon also said it has added collectibles and improved the prologue to improve pacing. The studio is also adding accessibility and usability settings to ensure as many people as possible can experience Until Dawn. The game will be available to pre-order from August 21st.
