In one of the largest drone attacks by Ukraine since the start of Russia’s war, the country’s military launched a barrage of 32 drones targeting Moscow on Sunday, news agency Reuters reported.
No deaths were reported from the strike until preliminary reports were released. However, one person was injured.
The drone attack reportedly caused flights to be diverted from three of Moscow’s main airports.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin was informed that all 32 drones were shot down by Russian air defense forces. It was intercepted over Moscow’s Ramenskoye and Kolomensky districts, he added.
The three airports whose flight operations were affected are those based in Moscow’s Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovo regions. After a brief period of disruption, the airports have resumed regular flight operations, officials said.
The drone strike is significant because Moscow and its neighboring regions are considered one of Europe’s largest metropolitan areas. The region is home to an estimated 21 million people.
The last major drone attack to be compared to this one was carried out by the Ukrainian military in September when 20 drones targeted the Ramenskoe district, 45 kilometers from the Kremlin. However, all of these drones were shot down by Russian air defense forces.
