an IP address (Internet protocol address) A unique numeric identifier assigned to all devices connected to the Internet or local network. This address allows devices to locate and communicate with each other. Think of it as the “digital home address” of a computer, smartphone, or other internet-connected device.

Why do I need an IP address?

1. Device Identification
The IP address ensures that the Internet knows where the data is sent. When you visit the website, the device sends a request to the server, and the IP address helps the server provide the correct response.

2. Device Communication
Allow devices such as computers, smartphones, printers, and servers to interact within the network.

IP address type

There are two main versions of IP addresses:

IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4)

  • format: Four numbers separated by dots (e.g. 192.168.1.1).
  • Each number ranges from 0 to 255 and provides the surroundings 4 billion possible addresses.
  • Today, the most widely used IPv4 addresses are becoming rare due to the increasing number of internet-connected devices.

IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6)

  • format: Eight groups of four hexadecimal numbers separated by colons (e.g. 2001:0DB8:85A3:0000:0000:8A2E:0370:7334).
  • Designed to overcome IPv4 limitations, offering ~340 ondecillion unique address.
  • Ensures future scalability of new technologies.

IP addresses can also be classified according to their assignment method.

  • Static IP Address – Permanently allocated to devices commonly used for servers and critical services.
  • Dynamic IP Address – It may be assigned temporarily (usually by a DHCP server) and may be changed upon reconnection. They are often used in home networks.

Why do you need to know your IP address?
