Donald Trump has seen the country turn at a speed against him and his policies. Early in the weekFox News polls found immigrants were the last issue Trump received a positive approval rating.
A recent New York Times/Sienna College poll shows that the issue is gone either. The majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of Trump’s handling of immigrants.
Beyond immigration, Americans believe Trump has gone too far on the latest various issues New York Times poll:
-
61% of voters, including 33% of Republicans, said the president cannot impose tariffs without permission from Congress.
-
54%, including 26% of Republicans, said the president cannot rule out programs enacted by Congress.
-
63%, including 40% of Republicans, said they cannot deport legal immigrants the president has protested against Israel.
-
73% of voters, including 56% of Republicans, said the president should not send American citizens to prisons in El Salvador, as Trump threatened.
Americans don’t like what Trump does in the government, the economy, the immigration system and virtually everything.
The country has never seen its people turn on the president and his agenda immediately for his term.
Every president derives power from the concept of a bully’s pulpit and the president’s ability to potentially rally the masses into their causes.
Trump doesn’t have a bully’s pulpit, and Americans are gathering against him.
The president, who is not under mandate and faces real-time rejection from the majority of people, cannot use the usual channels of democracy as a source of power, so Trump is trying to incorporate what Americans don’t want from him.
What’s happening is a tug of war between Trump and the Americans. People are pushed back when Trump tries to use excessive and unconstitutional power.
Polls like the NYT polls are a warning. Trump has been warned to change course. If he refuses to do so, the next step voters will take will be in the ballot box where they strip Trump of power by stealing all or part of the majority of his Congress.
Outside of his base, Trump literally has no issues to stand on, which is why he looks to authoritarian measures to affirm his power.
