“Media outlets and news organizations that reprint documents or internal communications are following the orders of America’s enemies,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chung told reporters on Aug. 9. Report from Microsoftdetailed a phishing attack that took place in June, which targeted unnamed “high-ranking” campaign officials using a compromised account belonging to a former adviser.
According to Microsoft, hackers with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent the spear-phishing emails, which “contained fake forwarding links that directed traffic to attacker-controlled domains that then redirected it to the listed domain.” The group is known by several names, including Mint Sandstorm and Charming Kitten, Microsoft said. Over the past few years, the same group has been known to launch attacks against: Targeting the World Health Organizationsending malware-filled holiday greeting emails to US authorities, and many other attacks.
Microsoft said in a report this week that it was tracking an increase in “significant influence operations by Iranian actors.” The company added that Iran-linked campaigns stand out from Russian ones because they “emerged later in the election season and launched cyberattacks that were more election-focused than voter mobilization.”
