Trace Mountains have released a new song, “Friend,” off their upcoming album. Into the burning blueThe track, which features Japanese Breakfast’s Craig Hendrix, follows the seven-minute lead single “In a Dream.” Check out the accompanying video, directed by sisters Alix and Sam Sword, below.
“I often joke about myself as a ‘recovering loner,'” Dave Benton said in a press release. “When I wrote ‘Friend’ I was going through a pretty big transition in my life. I needed to address my loneliness and writing this song was kind of like the first step on that path. It was my way of saying, ‘Yes, I feel lonely sometimes,’ and dealing with that good old fashioned millennial malaise. I’m really grateful for the people I have in my life and grappling with the meaning of a word like ‘Friend’ seems impossible, but it’s fun to try.”
Speaking about the music video, Sam Sword said: “When Dave and I were brainstorming ideas for “Friend,” we were thinking about the strange nature of the loneliness epidemic. While talking on the phone, I suggested portraying him as a werewolf. At first we both laughed at the idea, but soon realized it was a playful way to capture the surreal social experiences we all endure. Dave and his reputation as a famous cat mom brought a unique perspective to the concept. We felt that exaggerating his personality with this creature feature was a fun way to explore the song’s themes. Our goal was to use humor to highlight the importance of true companionship in a world that can often feel chaotic and isolating.”
