House Democrats who oversee the USPS are concerned that the Trump administration is piloting to bypass the law and thwart the Unified Postal Service.
in letter To oversight committee chair James Kommer (R-KY), 20 House Democrats led by oversight committee ranking member Jerry Connolly (D-VA) wrote:
We write to request you to convene an immediate hearing on the Trump Administration’s plans for the USPS. Since the committee’s recent hearing on USPS, the Trump administration reportedly investigated the privatization of USPS, fired a bipartisan post office committee, integrated USPS into the Commerce Department, and is now exposing USPS, the most trusted federal agency in America, to Elon Musk’s chainsaw approach and the government’s effectiveness (Doge) chainsaw approach. This broad attack on USPS’ independence calls for council oversight, particularly from the committees that govern the USPS.
On December 14, 2024, the Washington Post reported that President Trump was considering actions in favour of privatizing USPS, ousting thousands of federal employees out of their duties and broadening the privatization of the agency’s critical services. Two months later, President Trump pointed out that he was preparing plans to fire the bipartisan postmaster and “integrate” the postmaster into the Commerce Department.
On March 13, 2025, I received a letter from General Louis DeJoy, Postmaster, in recognition of the agreement signed with “Doge Representatives” and the USPS signed the General Services Bureau to support the USPS in order to “identify and achieve further efficiency.” The agreement appears to include “a further reduction of 10,000 people over the next 30 days” and “plans for air transport reductions, ground transport and terminal handling. Through the facility through the “facilities” we will operate the contract termination and lease cancellations. “Of course, these are the main means by which important postal services such as medication, bills, voting, plots, letters and more are delivered nationwide to serve the country.
The agreement also demonstrates the Postmaster’s interest in blocking the approved Postal Regulatory Commission, potentially supporting fees, rulemaking, and specific industries, individuals and regions, at the expense of network operational needs and universal service obligations. This backroom agreement between billionaire-led Doge and Postmaster Dejoy raises alarms about the administration’s plans regarding the role of postal services as the public body of the cornerstone.
The postal service promotes the delivery of more than 115 billion mail each year. A significant portion of that is received bipartisan support in Congress and is not subject to universal service obligations integrated into the postal service mission, otherwise it will be delivered to difficult-to-reach areas where you will not receive services.
Democrats are seeking immediate hearings and copies of all contracts Dejoy has signed with Doge and Musk.
You don’t need rocket scientists or rich guys to fund rockets that tend to explode to understand what’s going on. Trump and Musk are trying to destroy the post office with a backroom deal that avoids law and surveillance.
Changes to the USPS can only be made by Congress, not the president who purchased the road to the White House or the supporters of his billionaires.
Trump and his billionaire oligarchs prefer to operate in secret, so it’s up to Congress members to warn the public about what’s going on, as public pressure is effective in bringing Trump backwards.
