Marvel’s Thunderbolts may be on the right track all around, and the studio could really use this win. In the world of comics, sometimes you can’t beat an anti-hero. They make the best protagonists, as their deranged morals, ambiguous methods, and cynical nature as heroes make for a purely fantastic viewing experience.
This seems to be the case in the following cases: Thunderbolt, Judging by the first teaser trailer, this is quite possibly the most entertaining Marvel team-up yet. The first three minutes of the film are packed with pretty much everything you could want in a superhero movie: humor, pathos, great songs, and some of the most entertaining characters in the series.

The story begins with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova/Black Widow visiting the down-and-out Red Guardian (David Harbour), which quickly brings us back to the essence of the characters we met in Black Widow – she’s the cocky strongman, he’s the former hero turned egocentric slacker. It’s perfect.
From there, Thunderbolt Joining Pugh and Harbour in the cast are returning characters Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), John Walker/US Agent (formerly Captain America) (Wyatt Russell), Eva Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), The Sentry (Lewis Pullman) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Thunderbolt Embark on a journey to assemble a ragtag band of heroes brought together for a nefarious purpose.
We’ve seen most of these people elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, but having them team up here strikes the right tone. The Thunderbolts group was formed by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, but quickly found themselves at odds. Black Widow. She’s basically Marvel’s version of DC’s Amanda Waller, superior and ruthless, and her powers include rallying people with actual powers to do her bidding.
This group of Thunderbolts are tricked into thinking they’re all on the same mission and end up working together as a result, which is easy to predict, but the real win here seems to be the interactions between the characters.
The film’s strength lies in the fact that its characters aren’t typical good-guy heroes, and so are forced to do good (despite their urges to be nasty), and this is made clear through its action-packed, witty scenes.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell and Hannah John-Kamen
We know that characters like Black Widow, Red Guardian, Winter Soldier, Ghost, and U.S. Agent all have dark pasts, so the film is set to give almost everyone a redemption story. This is a good move for Marvel and evidence that they’re playing the long game with some of these characters. Not everything has been great for this series, but bringing this group together seems like the right move.
