Extreme Gaming, Team Spirit and Team Liquid all won two matches on Wednesday, the first day of The International 2024, a $2.4 million tournament taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Dota 2 event will feature 16 teams (six invited teams and 10 that qualify from regional qualifiers) split into four groups of four teams each, with each match played in a best-of-two format. After group matches on Wednesday and Thursday, eight best-of-three seeding matches will be played on Friday and Saturday to determine the playoff bracket.
The playoffs will begin on Sunday, with a best-of-five grand final on September 15. The total prize pool will be $2,415,143. Prizes for each ranking have yet to be announced.
Playing in Group A on Wednesday, Extreme defeated HEROIC in 41 and 35 minutes (both on green), before defeating Gaimin Gladiators in 35 minutes on green and 30 minutes on red.
Liquid and Spirit quickly established themselves in the pecking order in Group D. Liquid defeated Aurora in 33 minutes on red and 44 minutes on green, and beastcoast in 41 minutes on green and 29 minutes on red.
The Spirit defeated Beast Coast in 38 and 30 minutes on the green, then defeated Aurora in 26 minutes on the green and 57 minutes on the red.
Cloud9, one of two teams to play just one match on Wednesday, also finished the day undefeated with a win over G2 x iG in Group B, winning in 35 minutes in red and 44 minutes in green.
In other matches on Wednesday, 1w Team drew with HEROIC and lost to Gaimin Gladiators in Group A. In Group B, Tundra drew with Talon Esports and G2.iG beat Talon. In Group C, Team Falcons drew with Team Zero and nouns, and BetBoom Team beat nouns and lost to Zero.
