Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) explained the important role women play in combat and how President Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, weakens the United States.
Duckworth, a veteran who lost both legs in combat, told CNN:
he is wrong Because women have made us more capable. In fact, our military would not be able to go to war without the 223,000 women who serve in uniform.
We will have a powerless army. An army that did not have the ability to deploy. You can’t take all the women out and go into combat for women in roles like infantry and Navy SEALs. These women meet the same criteria as men to be appointed to the position.
So, again, this shows that Mr. Hegseth is not qualified for the job because he doesn’t understand it. Apparently, even after finishing their service, women are actually very important. To a capable army. And with the recruiting challenges that we’re facing right now, if we were to pull all these women out and say they can’t go into combat, the military would face a serious personnel crisis.

Duckworth is right. The military is already facing a conscription crisis, and Hegseth’s backward and sexist ideas will only make the situation worse. Senator Duckworth sacrificed herself for our country in Iraq, and for a woman like her to be called unfit for combat is the ultimate insult.
In the bigger picture, Hegseth’s views are an example of Trump’s dream of returning the country to a time when white men ruled the country. From the deportation of immigrants to the destruction of women’s rights, the United States will have to contend with antiquated ideas of racism and sexism that many would like to leave behind.
Hegseth, the alleged sexual assaulter, is exactly the wrong person to lead the military.
