The Sugar Bowl will be held as scheduled on Wednesday night amid heightened security following the truck attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
Police Commissioner Ann Kirkpatrick confirmed that police presence will be increased at the Superdome for the College Football Playoff game between Georgia and Notre Dame.
Kirkpatrick said a driver “desperate to cause carnage and damage” drove a pickup truck at high speed through a crowd on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning, killing 10 people and killing at least 35 others. Kirkpatrick said he was injured.
“It was a very intentional action,” Kirkpatrick said. “This guy was trying to run over as many people as possible.”
Explosives were found at the scene, according to multiple reports, and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell called the incident a “terrorist attack.” The FBI announced that it is investigating it as an act of terrorism.
Authorities said the male suspect got out of the truck with an assault rifle and fired at the officers, killing them when they returned fire. At least two police officers were shot and injured, officials said. The suspect has not yet been identified.
Wednesday night’s CFP quarterfinal game between the second-seeded Bulldogs (11-2) and the seventh-seeded Fighting Irish (12-1) is scheduled to kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET is.
