Plus, they are very easy to make! With just a handful of pantry staples and a little simmering magic, you can quickly sprinkle these fun spuds. There are no flashy techniques or complicated materials. A simple, honest and comfortable food that brings a huge flavour. What’s more, they pair perfectly with everything from roast chicken to juicy steaks.

Which potatoes make the best stew potato recipe?

I’m biased towards russet potatoes. Because they are starchy enough to break beautifully due to their rich, creamy texture. But don’t worry if you have other varieties on hand. The potatoes work well. Yukon Gold Potato is another favorite, bringing a buttery flavor and velvety consistency to each bite.

Tips and tips

  • Mix and gently. The more you mix, the smaller the potato chunks will become, and they will disappear completely when you get hooked. Remember, you are aiming for a thick texture with a rich sauce.
  • Some people like to use bacon grease to swap out the butter in this recipe. I’m a butter girl myself, but here you can adjust it to your taste.
  • Enjoy the toppings! This dish tastes great, but there are many exciting topping options. There are a few of my favorites, including shredded cheese, chopped chives, bacon bits, hot sauce, sour cream, or shrimp.
  • You might be surprised to find out that the stewed potatoes make a great addition to your burrito! you’re welcome.
  • Stewed potatoes are naturally free of gluten, soy and nuts. They are also vegetarian options. To make them vegan, if you replace regular butter with olive oil, there are dishes that work for almost any dietary restrictions.

MAKE-AHEAD & Storage Instructions

Stew potato texture is my favorite when it’s stewed fresh, but you can make it a day or two in a pinch. Let it cool and then store in an airtight container in the fridge.

When ready to reheat, pop them over a microwave or medium heat. You may need to add a little more butter, splash or chicken soup to prevent it from burning.

To serve stewed potatoes as a side dish, combine them with hearty protein and side salad. I like to serve these oven-baked pork chops and wedge salads. Other options include freshly baked cob chicken legs and oven roasted corn.
