“How was this made?” Partnering with MoveOn for election fundraising
Our names are Paul, June, and Jason, and we’re not going to lie, you’ve probably seen us on your favorite TV shows and movies, but more on that later.
Last month, while watching the Democratic National Convention, I heard President Barack Obama say something interesting: “We don’t need four more years of fuss and failure and chaos. We’ve seen that movie before, and we all know the sequels are usually worse.”
We know a little bit about it. Well… at least the movie part.
For the past 14 years, we’ve hosted a podcast (er, a very successful one) called “How Did This Get Made?” where we watch terrible movies and joke with each other while trying to figure out how they got into theaters.EDIT: It’s now June and I want to go on record to say that some of us are being forced to watch it.)
No matter what June says, we have fun doing it and we think our fans enjoy listening to it. At least, we hope so, because our podcast gets 40 million downloads a year. We’ve won awards. Lots of awards. Trust us.
But although we are actors, writers, and comedians by trade, we are also Americans who understand how important this election is, and what a historic opportunity it is not only to defeat Donald Trump, but to elect Kamala Harris with a joyous new vision for our country.
We wanted to help in some way, and what better way to do that than to leverage our fan base and host a live virtual podcast recording of “How Did This Get Made?” All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to support MoveOn’s 2024 election plan to get 1.5 million voters to the polls in key battleground states and districts.
We decided to follow Barack Obama’s lead and use the show to talk about one of the most infamous sequels of all time, “Troll 2.” Fans have been asking us to do this for years, and in support of MoveOn, we finally caved. We even convinced our friend Adam Scott to join us for a livestream on Friday, September 6th at 8pm ET/5pm PST.
It will be fun, it will be chaotic, and there will likely be failures, but it will also raise a ton of money to support MoveOn and help win this election. Want to join in on this fun event? Click here to donate any amount to reserve your seat. You will receive a follow-up email with more details before the event.
Well, our friends at MoveOn say we should explain who we are in case you don’t immediately recognize our name (and if you don’t, how audacious of you).
I’m Paul Scheer. You may have seen me in The League, Veep, Black Monday, and my new movie Twisters. The New York Times Bestselling book “Happy Memories of Trauma”
I’m June Diane Raphael. You may have seen me on “Grace and Frankie,” “New Girl,” “Parks and Recreation,” or my other podcast, “The Deep Dive.” Or you may have read my guide to helping women run for office, “Represent: The Women’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World.”
And I’m Jason Mantzoukas, the guy who always ends up on the scene last. I’ve been on The League, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the new Disney+ series Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Or maybe you were walking down the street in Los Angeles one day and out of nowhere you heard someone yell “Geostorm.” do not have What told me was fans screaming, “How did they make this?” in Give the podcast a listen, I’m sure you’ll understand.
Adam Scott, who you may know from Parks and Recreation, Big Little Lies, and Severance, will tell you all about it.
We’re excited to discuss this wonderfully awful movie while also raising a ton of money to support the amazing work MoveOn will be doing over the next 6X days.
It’s going to be a really fun event, so don’t miss it. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard this podcast before, it might be better if you just listen without knowing anything.
Shall I meet you there? It would be better if I met you there.
–June, Jason and Paul
P.S.: June here again. Listen, do I want to see the most evil troll doll movie I can imagine? Of course not. But my right to control my body, and the rights of every other woman, girl, transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming person in this country, is on the ballot this November. And we must do everything we can to elect a president who will restore and protect abortion rights across the country. That’s Kamala Harris. And MoveOn has been mobilizing voters and winning elections for 25 years.
