People hating Sony’s superhero movie featuring a Spider-Man villain received mixed news last week. middle kraven the hunterSony has reportedly abandoned plans to create an interconnected universe of Spider-Man’s rivals following the box office failure of “Spiderman.” However, Variety reports that the studio will continue to work in the genre, with the following releases scheduled: Beyond the Spider-Verse And live action spiderman noir Series starring Nicolas Cage. No one is denying the ambitious nature of Spider-Verse movies, but I’m depressed to hear the news that Sony will continue to make superhero movies. Because they’re examples of everything wrong with this genre.

Sony’s superhero movies taste success

As Exhibitor Relations Analyst Jeff Bock pointed out, Sony’s fatal flaw is that “they… VenomThis led them to think they could create a “superhero” movie built around Spider-Man’s colorful gallery of villains. He pointed out how the studio failed to recognize that “Venom can be serialized, but other characters can’t.” It was a “fatal flaw” that kept Spider-Man from getting his own villainous movie. Because most of these villains are unconvincing on their own and have dire consequences. madame web Sony has proven equally incompetent when it comes to focusing on superheroes rather than supervillains.

Who are these heroes?

morbius

This brings us to the first clear example of Sony’s arrogance. They inexplicably assumed that audiences didn’t want any kind of brand recognition for the protagonists of these films. Marvel has been hard at work making Venom a CoroCoro comic character since the ’90s, so they had a lot of material to draw from when making his solo movie. But characters like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven aren’t as popular or developed, and focusing on them would be as crazy as the MCU releasing a Vulture or Mysterio movie without Spider-Man. It was.

When it comes to the MCU, a comparison to Sony shows how the latter studio is putting the cart before the horse when it comes to superhero movies. While Marvel has cast some big names over the years, many of the fan-favorite characters are played by relative unknowns, including Tom Holland. Marvel has taken the time to bring in great actors to captivate audiences, but in films like Kraven and Madame Web, they seemed to be counting on the familiar stunt casting (hey, look). , kick ass (is now an anti-hero!) should be enough to keep viewers interested.

What’s worse is that Sony has no idea how to properly tie together a superhero movie. We get the MCU’s Vulture-like gesture towards a shared world. morbius, and no way home There was a post-credits confirmation from Marvel that Sony’s film will exist in its own multiverse. But the movie never seemed to build anything or tap into a common world. That would be fine if the individual heroes and villains were incredibly compelling, but that’s simply not the case.

The punchline to all of this is that Sony is committed to making more superhero movies, and there’s basically no sign that they’ve learned from the film’s critical and commercial failures. morbius, madame weband kraven the hunter. This studio seems intent on spending millions of dollars on something that looks and feels like something you’d find on Tubi’s virtual bottom shelf. We can only hope they take at least one lesson to heart going forward, that audiences might actually want Spider-Man in a Spider-Man universe movie.

Or maybe you’re hoping that something like the ironic “It’s Movin’ Time” meme can give these awful movies a cultural footprint they never could have enjoyed on their own pathetic merits. No.
