slow cooker black eyed peas – This recipe is an easy take on a Southern delicacy. A hearty bowl of smoky, comforting black-eyed peas is great for your health and heart, especially when you don’t have to tend to a pot of boiling peas. 😉 This is one of my favorite southern regions that the whole family will return to in no time.
Cooking black-eyed peas in the slow cooker couldn’t be easier and they’re packed with authentic flavor (and nutrition, too, but don’t tell the kids 🤫). Throw some peas in the pot in the morning and you’ll have perfectly cooked peas in time for dinner. There’s no need to soak it, so it honestly couldn’t get any better.
Another great thing about black-eyed peas is that they make a great side dish to any meal. You can spoon it over rice, add it to soup, or enjoy it on its own. The possibilities are endless.

Flavor variations
- Make black-eyed pea stew by adding 1 cup of chopped beans. carrot When frying onions and celery. Cook as directed and add canned food. diced tomatoes Cook for 15-20 minutes until the peas are finished cooking. Garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro.
- make vegetarian version This slow cooker black-eyed peas recipe leaves out the sausage and bacon and uses vegetable broth in place of chicken broth. Add 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika for extra flavor.
- Black-eyed beans are delicious ham hockToo! If you want to replace sausage and bacon with ham hocks, just add one large or two small hocks when you start cooking. After 7 hours, remove the ham hock and cut the meat into strips to remove excess fat. If the peas look a little oily due to the fat in the ham hock, you can place a paper towel over the beans for a few seconds to absorb some of the fat and defatte. Return the shredded ham hock to the pot, stir, and serve. 🐷
recipe tips
- There is no need to soak black-eyed peas, but there is no harm in doing so. Soak for 8 hours or overnight, and the recipe calls for only 5 cups of chicken broth. Then cook on high for 5 hours instead of 7 hours.
- If you want creamier beans, remove a cup of beans and mash them. Return to slow cooker and stir.
- Opinions differ as to whether beans should be salted before or after cooking. However, some claim that salting it first makes it softer. 🧂
