The country’s dream of winning its first-ever medal at the Winter Olympics has received a major boost with the passage of a new law granting Philippine citizenship to Russian figure skater Alexander Korovin.
Sen. Francis Tolentino emphasized this as he praised President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent signing of Republic Act (RA) No. 12115, which he sponsored in the Senate.

“Being a tropical country does not prevent the Philippines from dreaming of success in the Winter Olympics. Our athletes brought honor to the country by winning multiple medals at the recent stage of the Summer Olympics. Like,” he said.
The senator said he and other members of Congress are committed to helping Filipinos pursue their dreams of ice castles and cool running, and to revitalize figure skating, which has gained immense popularity among young people. He added that he promoted the bill.
Kolovin, along with Filipino figure skater Isabella Gamez, will be proudly flying the national flag under the management of the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) starting in 2022.

According to the PHSU website, Gamez and Kolovin won the country’s first pair’s medal at an International Skating Union (ISU) competition and won a silver medal at the 2022 France Games. They were also the first pair from Southeast Asia and the Philippines to qualify and compete. The prestigious World Figure Skating Championships will be held in 2023 and 2024. Gamez and Kolovin are the first pair from Southeast Asia and the Philippines to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. In 2024.
The two hope to achieve excellent results at the Asian Winter Games to be held in China next February and qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
During the Senate debate, Mr. Korovin told senators how he came to love the Philippines as his home. The champion figure skater is also committed to mentoring and inspiring young Filipino figure skaters to achieve their dreams.
An active supporter of the sport, Tolentino also pushed for legislation to naturalize Justin Brownlee, a Ginebra resident and importer who led the Gilas men’s basketball team at last year’s Asian Games. It was the first gold medal for this country in 61 years. .
