Here is one of my favorite simple salad recipes. This tomato, basil and mozzarella caprese salad is a summer favorite that the whole family loves. When tomatoes are in season, we make it frequently in the summer. This classic Italian dish is light, flavorful and delicious!
Classic Caprese Salad
This appetizer (or side dish) is not really easy. All you need is slicing, arrangements and spraying herbs. Known in Italy as the Insalata Caprese, it is thought to have started on Capri, but no one knows where it came from. Others point out that it is a patriotic similarity to the Italian flag. But it happened, this herbal tomato salad is very good!
It’s quick to put together quickly, but still looks impressive, making it perfect for weekday dinners or next BBQ.
I often find the simplest recipes to be the most delicious. Especially when using seasonal agricultural products. Very few really fresh peaches, tomatoes or salads taste good right after they’ve been chosen.
Caprese Materials
The ingredients are simple so when it comes to Caprese, it’s not often hidden behind. The watery, rubbery tomatoes here don’t taste very good. I like to use the best Caprese salad, using homemade tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes from the farmers’ market. A few freshly ground black peppers and flaky sea or kosher salts can really help bring out the flavor of the tomatoes. But good salt works.
I like salad plains, but I can also add a reduction in balsamic (aka balsamic vinegar gl drugs) or a drizzle of vinaigrette. Make a meal and add grilled chicken to the sides!
Try individual Caprese salad skewers for fun variations. Garnish grape or cherry tomatoes, between them with basil leaves and a bowl of mozzarella cheese.
