ESPN hired Shams Charania as its next senior NBA insider on Monday, naming the 30-year-old to replace his mentor Adrian Wojnarowski, who announced his retirement from journalism last month.
“I’m honored to join ESPN…I can’t wait to join the incredible group of colleagues at ESPN and serve sports viewers around the world,” Charania said in a social media post.

According to the New York Post, which broke the news, Charania will become the “youngest chief newsbreaker in ESPN history.”

Mr. Charania joined Yahoo Sports early in his career and worked with Mr. Wojnarowski, a longtime sports columnist who had by then become the NBA’s top news breaker. Since Wojnarowski joined ESPN in 2017, he and Charania have frequently faced off for scoops.

Mr. Charania left Yahoo and worked for The Athletic and Stadium, the former as a writer and the latter as a broadcaster. He also created content for sports gambling company FanDuel.
Pat McAfee, who appears on a daily sports talk show on ESPN, was torn between Charania as Wojnarowski’s obvious successor at the network.
Front Office Sports reports that ESPN is considering moving Jeff Passan from Major League Baseball insider to the NBA, and is also considering making Adam Schefter the lead insider for the NFL and NBA at the same time. Reported.
Wojnarowski, 55, surprised the basketball world in September by leaving ESPN and becoming general manager of men’s basketball at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure. –Field level media
