Sean Manaea struck out 10 batters in seven innings and the New York Mets shut out the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-0, on Monday in a May 8 make-up game.
Manaea (8-4) allowed six hits and walked none, but has pitched 14 scoreless innings over his last two starts, striking out 21. Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz each pitched one hitless inning in support of Manaea.
Tyrone Taylor hit a three-run double and Jeff McNeil hit a solo home run to score two runs for the Mets, who bounced back after losing their previous two games.
Cardinals starting pitcher Andre Pallante (4-6) gave up 5 hits, 5 runs and 2 walks in 4 2/3 innings. He also struck out 2 batters.
St. Louis went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals have lost four of their last five games and eight of their last 12.
The Mets took a 1–0 lead into the second inning when Pete Alonso walked with one out and José Iglesias singled to left field, and after McNeil was forced out, Alonso scored on a wild pitch.
Manaea allowed a double to Nolan Arenado with one out in the bottom of the inning, but struck out the next two batters to get Arenado out.
The Cardinals threatened again in the third inning when Pedro Page singled as leadoff hitter and Tommy Pham singled with two outs, but Manaea averted the crisis by striking out Willson Contreras.
Manaea left two more runners on in the fourth inning after Alec Burleson and Brendan Donovan singled with two outs, then struck out Paige.
The Mets opened up a 5–0 lead in the fifth inning: McNeil singled with one out, advanced to second base on Francisco Alvarez’s single, and scored on Harrison Bader’s double.
Francisco Lindor walked and then Taylor cleared the bases with a double.
McNeil’s homer to right field in the sixth inning extended New York’s lead to 6-0. It was his 10th home run of the season.
