Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman praised Baker Mayfield’s competitiveness and highlighted the quarterback’s “boring” nature as a positive. His comments mark a marked change from past conflicts dating back to 2019.
During an appearance on Kay Adams’ “Up & Adams” on Thursday, Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowler, expressed his appreciation for Mayfield’s competitive spirit. The timing of his comments coincides with the resurgence of Mayfield’s career in Tampa Bay.
“I like it, I like all the little things. I’m here for the little things,” Sherman said in response to Adams’ question about evaluating trivial quarterbacks.

He added that Mayfield will likely use his past history as motivation, saying:

“I’m sure Baker knows history and Baker’s nitpicks in that regard. And I like that about him.”
Their relationship made headlines in October 2019 when Sherman accused Baker Mayfield of nuzzling him during a pregame handshake. It was before the 49ers vs. Browns game. Mayfield was the Browns’ QB at the time. Although video evidence later contradicted Sherman’s original claims, the incident illustrated their complex power relationship.
Baker Mayfield’s journey from critical scrutiny to $100 million contract signing
Baker Mayfield’s approach to dealing with criticism has evolved significantly. At a press conference on Thursday, he announced that he would be stepping away from social media.
“I was taking lots of notes and trying to prove people wrong, but that’s not the way to go through life,” Mayfield said.
This change has paid off. Mayfield threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2024, a career high. His performance helped the Buccaneers win back-to-back NFC South titles. He signed a three-year, $100 million contract from a non-league quarterback.
“We’ve got to believe in ourselves. We’ve got to move forward and play for each other,” Mayfield said in a press conference.
Coach Baker Mayfield is currently focused on success in the playoffs as the Buccaneers prepare to face the Commanders in a wild-card matchup.
