The Rugby Football League has launched a compliance investigation into Salford’s decision to acquire a reserve team at the Bet Red Super League opener at St. Helens on Saturday.
The investigation allows Salford to be charged with violations of the operating rules and, if proven, exposes the club to potential sanctions.
A statement issued Monday stated, “The RFL will contact the Salford Red Devils today to launch a compliance investigation to consider the situation around the squad selection of St. Helens’ Bettsfreed Super League Fixtures. I confirmed that and see if it brought the sport. Disgust.”
The pay cap limit has led the Red Devils to use many senior players in games, but coach Paul Laurie chose not to start with other more experienced team members available.
The Saints’ 15-Try Romp is the biggest winning margin in Super League history, attracting criticism from rivals, including Warrington head coach Sam Burgess.
The RFL Chiefs met Monday morning and determined that the club could answer any potential violations of the competition rules. This requires that each club “always have enough teams of athletes to meet their obligations in all competitions.”
Salford announced the closing of the acquisition on Friday, but details are understood to be still well-defined for the RFL to lift current restrictions.
Apart from further development, they were able to find themselves under the same restrictions on Saturday for their next match against Leeds.
Salford boss Laurie said that after the saints were told they could not use players featuring the Midlands hurricanes in the Challenge Cup after the defeat, and chose not to name a mix of youth and experience. I did.
“I don’t think that’s the right thing to do,” he said.
Salford’s team selection was widely criticized for describing the situation as a “black mark of competition” after Burgess’s own victory at Huddersfield on Sunday.
Salford, who has responded for seven days, could not immediately comment.
