San Antonio Spurs head coach Greg Popovich met his team for the first time since Stroke on Thursday and notified players who will not return this season, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported.
ESPN reported last week that it expects the team to end the campaign without Popovich. Popovich suffered from what the Spurs called a mild stroke on November 2nd, in just five games of the season.
Interim coach Mitch Johnson led the Spurs to the 22-30 mark (24-33 overall) in the absence of Popovic, who coached the team since the 1996-97 season and won five NBA championships.
Popovich’s plans for the upcoming season are unknown.
The most winning coach in NBA history turned 76 on January 28th. Popovich owns a career record of 1,407-843 in 2,250 games against the Spurs. The three-time NBA Coach of the Year was introduced in 2023 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
