Rangers were drained but it was a well-deserved win against Celtic, who looked invincible in the Scottish Premiership until kick-off.
Philippe Clement ended his Old Firm misdeeds with a deserved result in last month’s League Cup final, but how much is he worth heading into the second half of the season?
Celtic had been in good form but came to a shuddering halt against Ibrox, failing to show any of the tempo and desire that helped them build a commanding lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
A title shot may still be out of reach for Rangers, but could this be the outcome that changes their season? And will Brendan Rodgers make a quick recovery after suffering his first defeat of the season and only second ever in an Old Firm game?
Boyd: Rangers have to back this up
former rangers striker chris boyd On Sky Sports:
“Away, Rangers haven’t been good enough. Ibrox isn’t the problem, European football on Thursday nights isn’t the problem. It’s been the away games that have hurt Rangers so far this season. .”
“We’ve seen performances like this and they need to back this up. Next week it will be at Easter Road at Dens Park. These games will tell us a lot. ”
“We can enjoy tonight, but after that, I think the reality is we’re still 11 points down, but I thought Rangers were great today, not taking anything away from Rangers.
“They asked the players to participate. They said at the beginning of the show that there might be a chance for players who haven’t played before to come in and stake their rights. I think Ridvan Yilmaz is great. I thought so, and so did Dujon Sterling and Robin.” Propper played like a proper defender – well, they didn’t ask much of Celtic – and Jephte was up and down all day.
“Nicolas Raskin was outstanding, Václav Cerny and Giannis Hagi had that bit of quality. It’s a good day for Rangers, but then you ask yourself where was this team? Where were we? I have seen a glimpse of it.”
Lennon: ‘Ear-clipping’ Celtic thrash
former celtic manager neil lennon On Sky Sports:
“The key question is whether this is the start of a good second half of the season for Rangers. Let’s get it right, the first half of the season was far from good enough. Today’s performance was great from the goalkeeper to the strikers. ”
“They created a lot of chances, they had some flow but there’s only one game left. The important thing now is that they go to Easter Road on Sunday and have the same mindset consistently to close the gap on Celtic. Or not.”
“For Celtic, this is a clip in the ear and they will be fighting again. There was a bit of apathy in this game, but Rangers fans will go away happy with what they saw today.”
“From a Celtic point of view, it’s a reset.”
Sutton: ‘Celtic will get back on track’
former celtic forward chris sutton On Sky Sports:
“Everything that could go wrong for Celtic went wrong. It’s difficult for Celtic to keep up the winning streak they’ve had. We take it for granted, but against Dortmund… Celtic were exceptional, apart from that.”
“Where do Celtic want to be? Eleven points is a big difference. They had an off day today and eventually they will get back on track.”
Rangers denounce coin toss
Celtic substitute Arne Engels was hit by a coin tossed by a Rangers fan late in the win at Ibrox.
The club’s record sign appeared to have been hit just above the eye as he was about to turn a corner, and a police officer quickly bagged it for evidence.
A Rangers spokesperson said: “Rangers FC condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms.
“The club can confirm that it will assist Police Scotland with their investigation.”
