Seb Drozd wrote himself in Scottish Cup history by sinking Rangers with a stunning winner at Ibrox, where James Tavernier of Gers Skipper had the final penalty saved by Calum Ferrie.
The famous old competition was the last realistic opportunity on Philip Clement’s part. This season, Gers is 13 points behind Premier leader Celtic, who beat them in the Premier Sports Cup final in December. Light Blues is up to the final 16 of the Europa League.
Callum Davidson’s championship side scored the only goal in the 69th minute in the fifth round tie, then via British man Sultive Drozd, who signed from Millwall last October I did.
Homeside was dramatically awarded a penalty for five minutes of additional time when William Teazard fouled Ciriel Deserz but saw Tavernier’s spot kick saved by the ferry.
One of the biggest shocks in Scottish football history was bringing Clement back under the spotlight, and after an unthinkable defeat before the match, the booing rang around Ibrox.
Davidson achieved a cup success at St. Johnston at Ibrox to win the trophy in 2021, but few people have made a bet on the spider’s second success.
Liam Kelly took over Jack Butland from the French side of the Lille with goals from the Rangers and 22-year-old Portuguese defender Rafael Fernandez. Robin Propper and Nedim Bajrami are back.
On loan from the Rangers, Adam Devine missed a visitor and was replaced by 19-year-old Zach Mawichin. Drozd signed a loan from Doncaster and fell on the bench in favor of Kyle Hurst.
All of the Light Blues ran early, but the finish was almost subpar.
The ferry misplaced a clearance to Mohamed Diomande four minutes later, but the Guards midfielder’s poor attempt at an unprotected goal from 20 yards was followed by Iannis Hagi’s long distance effort after a few minutes. Similarly, they missed the target.
The ferry was saved twice from Diomande by winger Vaclav Cerny and attacker Bajrami, and in 30 minutes the home fans were beginning to run out of patience.
Just before the break, Diomande was able to knock the target ball out of 8 yards following the corner, yet another opportunity was wasted.
Deserz and Nicholas Ruskin replaced Bajrami and Rice at the start of the second half, but it was Hamza Igamane who quickly blasted high above the bar to end another GERS attack.
At the other end, Hearst was a few inches away from his connection to Ryan Duncan’s cross, cleared from the left by Zach Rudden.
Just before the ferry pushed away the distance header from Igamane following Serny Corner, an hour later, Ridvan Ilmaz and John Suter arrived towards Fernandez and Hagi.
The rangers were in the rut and had a hard time getting out.
Drozd was on the pitch in less than three minutes as a replacement for Hurst when he latched into the corner from Louis Longridge. An ec travel fan.
The rangers kept pushing, but the visitors repelled anything that was thrown at them, and by the end the home was attacking with frustration rather than anything guilty.
After that, the penalty drama came, but still the ferry was not beaten, diving to the left to push away Tavernier’s penalty, and soon afterwards the final whistle confirmed his famous victory.
