Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy underwent a second surgery on his right knee earlier this week.
Coach Kevin O’Connell said Wednesday the procedure was done because McCarthy developed swelling as he began increasing the intensity of his rehabilitation. His first surgery in mid-August was a season-ending surgery to repair a significant meniscus tear.
“I know he had what we thought was a major injury during training camp, but he really got hurt every step of the way,” O’Connell said Wednesday. “As his rehab progressed, we noticed there was a little bit of swelling there. He’s been doing everything we’ve asked him to do because we’ve been given time. We just wanted to make sure there was no reason to be concerned and all reports were correct.”He is on track as originally planned and feels great. ”
McCarthy continues to prepare for the 2025 season and has already signed on to Caleb Williams (Bears), Jaden Daniels (Commanders), Drake Maye (Patriots), and Bo Nix (Broncos).
McCarthy was injured in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 10. In the game, he completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
McCarthy was selected 10th overall in the 2024 draft by the University of Michigan. He quickly improved the Vikings’ offense and was a top candidate for the starting pitcher before his injury.
Seven-year veteran Sam Darnold has revived his career by passing for 2,141 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in nine games. He is now two TD passes away from setting a career high.
Minnesota (7-2) visits the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
